Two hours later, I stepped out into the solarium overlooking the back lawn of the house. All the pretending and nonstop chatter, including everyoneâs opinions about my engagement, from family to random guests, had taken their toll.
I wasnât the younger version of myself anymore, the one whoâd mouth off and tell people where to stick their thoughts. Moving to Vegas had taught me to put on what I called my customer-service smile while envisioning lopping off their heads with a knife or two.
Now, I was desperate for a stiff drink, but since it wasnât becoming of a proper lady to engage in hard liquor in public, I needed a few minutes alone, away from the watchful gazes of my aunts, the society matrons, the socialites, and everyone else who couldnât figure me out.
Not everyone here tonight disliked me or gave me a hard time. Those friends couldnât understand why Iâd agreed to this, and I had no doubt they would try to corner me sooner or later. Which gave me another reason to hide away in this room far away from the hustle and bustle of the eveningâs events.
Though things had finally calmed.
Simon and I had gone through the formal engagement charade from the introduction of family, dinner, then a final ceremony where Simon had presented me with a ring.
Weâd remained formal and remote after the conversation about my inheritance, and in a sense, it had been for the best. Wanting to stab him kept the lust at bay.
I glanced down at my engagement ring and shook my head. With its beauty and uniqueness, the piece had taken my breath away when heâd slid it on my finger.
It was exactly something Iâd have chosen, unconventional and unlike anything one would see on every womanâs hand. Heâd given me a ring with a deep blue pear-shaped diamond surrounded by white diamonds.
The asshole pissed me off and then gave me something I would have wanted to wear if this was the real fucking thing.
I wanted to ask if heâd bought it or given the task to Kasen but kept those thoughts to myself, especially since I already knew the truth.
I wasnât supposed to like him. This wasnât supposed to be something fun, something I enjoyed, something I looked forward to when he was gone.
I released a deep breath as a lump formed in the pit of my stomach.
What the fuck had I gotten into?
I had to put some distance between us. I couldnât lose perspective. I couldnât let him fuck with my head. I knew better. My future involved a life away from all of this.
âAdmiring your new jewelry?â a voice asked from the doorway to the solarium.
I lifted my head to find Camilla Santos with a group of women I assumed were her current entourage behind her. Her disdain for me showed in the few words sheâd spoken, reminding me of her behavior all through high school.
This was one of the reasons Iâd left. People seriously needed to grow the fuck up.
